Hi, I’m Paloma. I’m 19 years old, and for the past two days I’ve been doing some work experience here at Pink Squid!
After finishing my BTEC in Business Studies at sixth form, I wasn’t sure of what I wanted to do next. Seeing as the marketing industry is something I’d learned about during my studies and I’d actually found pretty interesting, I felt real-life experience would help me decide whether this is the right industry for me.
Since being here, not only did I get to experience their vibrant and hard-working culture, but I spent time shadowing The Motion Team, Art Directors, UX/UI Designers and Strategists. This gave me an insight into how the different teams all work together to create the finished campaign, website, video or project their client has briefed them on.
I feel as though this experience has been so eye-opening. Prior to this I had no knowledge of how an agency operated day-to-day. But, I now find it easier to picture which role I could see myself enjoying and growing in. On paper, the strategist role suits my current skill set the most, or perhaps even project management. However, I was surprised by just how much the creative roles stood out to me. One of which being the Art Director. Rather than just having my sights set on marketing, I’m now pretty interested in exploring some more creative design courses and perhaps pursuing that as a career.
Ultimately, I think anyone who’s just finished sixth form and not sure on what they want to do, shouldn’t be worried at all. Just reach out to people to try and explore your options, there’s no one size fits all approach and you may be surprised to discover the opportunities available to you!
